Docentföreläsning: Creative Elicitation, Modeling, and Reasoning for Early Stage Software Requirements

Jennifer Horkoff, Software Engineering, håller sin docentföreläsning "Creative Elicitation, Modeling, and Reasoning for Early Stage Software Requirements".

Abstract för docentföreläsningen:

Methods which capture the requirements of software systems must be able to consider the complex interplay of system value, quality and the capabilities of technology. Eliciting software requirements is not as simple as asking potential users what they want a system to do. User requirements are often conflicting, uncertain, incomplete, or imprecise. Often, user requirements are limited by what they perceive to be possible and constrained by the behavior of existing systems.

My research focuses on techniques to explicitly support the elicitation of socio-technical, creative requirements which balance innovation, value, and practical considerations. Choices made during the early stages of software development are critical. Decisions must be made over system scope, selecting or rejecting alternative creative ideas and potential system functionalities, considering the use of existing systems (services, applications), and making trade-offs between conflicting quality requirements. Knowledge gained during early RE analysis is invaluable for downstream development: early requirements must be traceable to artifacts created as part of system design and implementation, facilitating runtime requirements monitoring evaluating system value.

In my future research, I will continue the focus on capturing, refining, reasoning and monitoring over the intangible in two key areas: software value reasoning and defining, measuring, and monitoring quality requirements (NFRs) over systems using machine learning. In this talk I give an overview of my past work and outline these future directions.
