Mukelabai Mukelabai, avdelningen för software engineering, presenterar sin licentiatavhandling "Understanding Variability-Aware Analysis in Low-Maturity Variant-Rich Systems".

Sammanfattning:

Software is often customized and exists in many variants to address varying stakeholder requirements, such as specific market segments or hard-ware constraints. The high degree of variability and customization introduces high complexity and pauses quality assurance challenges that render traditional single-system analysis techniques non-scalable when applied. Even though several variability-aware analysis techniques have been proposed to address this complexity, they find little application in many organizations that use low-maturity clone-and-own strategies to manage their software variants.

In this thesis we contribute to an empirical understanding of quality assurance needs in low-maturity variant-rich systems and of their properties. Through surveys and interviews with practitioners, as well as case studies of open-source systems, we seek to understand (i) industrial practices and needs for analyzing variant-rich systems, and (ii) how to obtain information necessary to leverage variability-aware analyses.

Our studies reveal, among other things, that quality assurance of low-maturity variant-rich systems is challenging due to missing essential meta-information, such as relationships between features and their implementation in source code. We contribute to addressing this challenge through a recommender system that supports continual recording of such meta-information.
