Sustainability and humanity in focus at C&SE Hackathon 2019

News: Jun 24, 2019

Between May 10 - 12 our students participated in the Computer & Software Engineering (C&SE) Hackathon 2019. A total of 33 students from various programs, such as Software Engineering and Management, Computer Science, Applied Data Science got together in teams to work together with organizations such as Ericsson, OpenHack and Västtrafik to develop solutions under the themes of "sustainable and smart cities" and "coding for humanity".

The Hackathon had two winning teams. The first winner was chosen by a popular vote among participants and attendees of the Hackathon, whereas the second was decided by a panel of judges with practitioners from various organizations such as Ericsson, Tele2, Cellink and OpenHack.

The favourite best solution voted by all participants was developed by the team Kodknäckargänget. Their solution combines IoT and RFID tag to allow users to identify missing or stolen items by using simple RFIDs tags and Scanners. The team will continue working with their solution and similar technologies at Ericsson.

The winner of the Hackathon decided by a panel of judges was the team Trackoon. The team created a platform that combines Google Maps and Image Recognition APIs, to use information from public posts (e.g., Facebook, online news articles) to identify photos of places with litter. Identified areas are then shown as points on a map for authorities and communities to take immediate action, such as, cleaning the area, planning urban intervention, or even create community engagement and awareness on sustainability.

The C&SE Hackathon is arranged by the student associations Ctrl-Alt-Team (CAT) and SystemvetarKlubben för Informatik och Programmering (SKIP), and the teacher Francisco Gomes at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
