Welcome to doctoral studies at the IT Faculty!

Doctoral studies (third cycle) is for you who want to further develop the skills you have obtained from education on earlier levels and who want to acquire methods to process critical issues in a specific area of ​​research. The doctoral programme leads to a licentiate degree of 120 credits, alternatively a doctoral degree of 240 credits.


The main objective of doctoral studies is to develop the advanced knowledge and skills required for you to be able to conduct independent research within a discipline. Another goal is to be able to contribute to the development of knowledge in your area of research, where the final outcome is a thesis. The thesis work is a central part of the doctoral education and shall give you the ability to critically process research issues and independently plan, implement, and document the scientific work.

Doctoral studies also aim to develop your ability to transform scientific achievements, your skills and knowledge, into further research and/or other qualified professional work. The doctoral programme will also develop your skills in communication and teaching.

Please note! To be admitted as a PhD student at any of our two departments – or in generally in Sweden – you have to apply for an open PhD position within the subject. All vacant positions are advertised.
